Old Photo Restoration is designed for scanned family photographs, faded prints and archival images where scratches, dust, weak contrast, discoloration or lost detail make the original difficult to use. The goal is not to make every historical photograph look newly shot. A good restoration should improve readability while preserving identity, age and the character of the source. Start with the best scan you can create, ideally from the original print rather than a screenshot of a social media copy. Use even lighting or a flatbed scanner, keep the full border when possible, and save an untouched master before any cleanup. The restoration workflow can reduce scratches, repair fading and improve resolution, but heavily damaged areas may require the model to reconstruct plausible detail. That matters most around faces, jewelry, text, uniforms and other historically important features. Compare restored faces with the original and with other known photographs when identity matters. If you also want to colorize a black-and-white photo, treat that as a separate interpretive step rather than proof of the original colors.

No. When scratches, tears or fading have removed information, AI can estimate plausible content but cannot prove what the original pixels contained. Keep the raw scan and treat strong reconstruction as a restored interpretation rather than new historical evidence.
Usually correct broad exposure, color cast and physical damage first, then use face restoration only where needed. This makes it easier to judge identity and prevents facial reconstruction from compensating for a poor scan or severe global color problem.
Keep at least three files: the untouched scan, a high-quality restored master and smaller sharing copies. Store the archival scan and restored master in more than one location and label generated or colorized versions clearly.
